Why are we building an AI-powered Resume Ranker as our first offering?
When we started Highvalue, we were very very clear that we will build to our strength. My recruiting experience of 15+ years and Sankalp's design experience of 13+ made it easier to conclude that we will build smart recruiting tools for recruiters with AI, design and user experience as our core.
We had a laundry list of ideas and we saw how broken a good recruiting experience is and how most of the tools don't care about one of the most important cogs of the wheel, the recruiters.
But we also wanted to build our first product which solves one of my major pain points and use that as a first starting point for this journey. Hence the AI resume ranker.
Problem statement:
Every time I would post a job, I would get at least 400-500 applications (the word here is at least). My inbox/ATS would be full next day.
Now I had to go through each and every application to get a 5-10% ROI on my time. For every 500 resumes in my inbox I would typically find 20 odd resumes which would be very high on my list to do recruiter phone screen but to find them I have to spend excruciating hours.
I can't leave them as well. Few of the best people I have hired in my career have come to me as an inbound lead.
The anxiety:
When you get 500 resumes applying to your job, you know you will have few very good people in that mix. You can't leave it unattended.
Recruiting good talent is also about speed. If you procrastinate and reach them 7 days later, you know they would have accepted an offer or deep into final rounds with another good company.
And then the guilt follows, if only I would have been a bit faster to sift through those resumes I might have had the closure with this fantastic candidate who was interested and applied and I did not have to do an intense selling for them to show up for the interviews or did not have to follow up every day on their prep.
The solve:
Keywords is one of the poorest ways to look into resumes. The more relevant keywords shoved in the resume, the more optimized it looks for keyword search but tenured recruiters easily see through it.
We wanted to build a system which takes into account a lot of parameters that actual recruiters would take, understand the context. Understand the environment the person is coming from and then build a system which is able to think like a top recruiter screening a resume.
And after months of POC, evaluating multiple resumes against multiple jobs, creating a strong self-learning system we have built a solution that I wish I had when I was starting up in my recruitment career.
The output:
You have a job, you have 500+ resumes. Our ranker evaluates it contextually and gives you all the candidates arranged in terms of best match with a solid recommendation system around why a best match and also ice breaker questions for recruiters to initiate a meaningful conversation on their career progression.
Benefits for candidates:
Not only does our solution help recruiters, but it creates a better experience for candidates too. By enabling faster screening:
Qualified candidates receive responses in days rather than weeks
The system evaluates skills and potential beyond just keywords, giving non-traditional backgrounds a fairer chance
Candidates spend less time in limbo wondering if their application was even seen
Those who are a great fit get into the interview process quickly, before accepting offers elsewhere
This creates a more equitable recruiting ecosystem where talent isn't overlooked simply because a recruiter couldn't manually sort through hundreds of resumes fast enough.
Again, our mission is to keep AI, design and user experience as our core to build great products around recruiting.
We are not building an AI recruiter to replace recruiters. A recruiter does a great job of understanding so many aspects, representing the candidate and the company equally. Understand candidates who might come from different backgrounds might have different career trajectories and a different story all together. While AI does a great job of solving some complex problems but I still feel there is a strong human aspect in recruiting which is for a long time better done by us!
